If you go into your Dashboard, and then into "layout", that is where you make all of the changes. You probably know that... but if you want to add a picture to your header, click header and upload your picture, and then you can choose to have it instead of a title, or with your title on top. It can be a photo, or something you created... and also in "layout" there is a section for adding new page elements, that is where you would add pictures or buttons for your side bar. Don't know if that is helpful or not :)
